Description

The "You, Inc." paper provides a structured experience whereby you assess and present yourself to the “public” through a formal document. Metaphorically, you will be writing an annual report. The report should include your mission or purpose e.g. why are you doing what you are doing in life; your vision i.e. what you envision doing in the future, and the values that anchor you and govern your behavior. It should describe your assets (strengths) as well as your liabilities (limitations or weaknesses). Additionally, the report should present information about your customer base, and your product line. It should also describe the capital investments you’ve made over the past several years, and the impact or positive results these investments have yielded.

Next, your “annual report” should specify your plans for the next 12 months to help ensure you continue to move in the intended direction to support your mission and achieve your vision. Therefore, the report should identify and explain your growth objectives, and the measures you will use to track your progress.

Objectives

By the end of writing the You, Inc. paper, a successful learner should be able to:

Present an overall picture of himself/herself.
Specify his/her mission, vision and values.
Describe their strengths and weaknesses.
Develop objectives and measures related to improving two key skills
Create written “action plan” contracts to improve the two skills.

Activities

The learning activities for the “You, Inc.” include (suggested):

Review Appendix I in the Syllabus regarding “Specific Expectations for the U Inc. Paper.” (Written Contract: Your Personal Development Plan). Please pay particular attention to the underlined items and the four essential elements that MUST be present in the paper (see last paragraph of Appendix I explanation).

Review the information you’ve acquired –
- Assessment findings and results;
- Chapter and supplemental readings – emphasis on management principles and guidelines;
- Discussion posts and comments/suggestions of classmates
- Journal entries related to learning and insights
- Time management strategies – and the results of such

Write Draft Statements (using bullet points) of your:
- Mission, vision, values
- “Current status” – assets, liabilities, customer base, product line
- “Future plan” items – objectives, measures

Create narrative based on the above draft (bullet point) statements
Complete a Template for each of two skills you want to improve. NOTE: A blank template is attached to this Lesson Plan.
- An effective process is to first populate each of the item cells on the Template with jottings, and then go back and turn these notes into narrative statements.
Complete and Upload the entire You, Inc. paper by the last day of the class.
