This last of four chapters on interpersonal skills builds on the content of the previous chapters, especially supportive communication and power and influence. The chapter focuses on identifying the causes of conflict, considering personal preferences and contextual characteristics when selecting the appropriate conflict management strategy, and using the collaborative approach to resolving interpersonal confrontations.

Conflict management requires both effective analytical and behavioral skills. Identifying causes and alternative responses are analytical steps, whereas effectively implementing a plan requires behavioral skills.

An important fact to stress is that all elements in the model are necessary and will aid in resolving conflicts when both parties follow the guidelines. Even when the other party is not very cooperative, the guidelines for a given role, coupled with the discussion of assertiveness in the power chapter, still represent the best strategy for negotiating an acceptable outcome.

NOTE: Your “You, Inc.” paper is due at the conclusion of this module week which ends on Friday because the term ends that day.

Objectives

Utilize appropriate conflict management strategies
Resolve confrontation through collaboration

First, Complete the two diagnostic surveys related to managing conflict included in Chapter. Note: Please complete the assessments before you read the material in the chapter.

Note: Complete the “Managing Interpersonal Conflict Survey” twice: first as part of the survey battery. Then, complete it again (post) after you have done the reading and completed the exercises and assignments.

Complete Assignment (A0801) – “Exercises for Selecting an Appropriate Conflict Management Strategy.” Please see text pages 312-319 and Table 7.4 related to the three short vignettes. Refer to the following for additional guidance: Fig. 7.3 and Fig. 7.6, and Tables 7.2 and 7.3 as well as Table 7.4. Also see Assignment A0801, for specific guidance and instructions that are provided. Due: 11:59 p.m. this Friday.
