Description

The chapter focuses on two sources of power (personal and position), as well as on the process of transforming power into influence. This process involves selecting the appropriate influence strategy and acting assertively when necessary. Two points need to be emphasized: (1) power does not equal influence, and (2) one’s motivation for seeking power is a major determinant of one’s level of influence.

This is the second of four chapters on interpersonal skills. Along with Chapter 4, which focuses on coaching, counseling, and supportive communication, it is a foundation chapter—presenting fundamental principles that are refined in later chapters on motivation and conflict management.

You should also start your U, Inc. paper during this module. See A0802 for detailed instructions. Note: This module also contains special “You, Inc.” supplemental resources. These materials along with the detail provided in the syllabus hopefully will provide you with the information you need to complete your “You, Inc.” paper.

Objectives

By the end of this module, a successful learner should be able to:

Enhance his/her personal and positional power
Use influence appropriately to accomplish exceptional work
Neutralize inappropriate influence attempts

Activities – Module 6

The learning activities for Module 6, (Chapter II-5) include:

First, Complete the diagnostic surveys for power and influence included in Chapter. Please complete the assessments before you read the material in the chapter. Note: Complete the “Gaining Power and Influence” assessment twice: first as part of the survey battery. Then, complete it again (post) after you have done the reading and completed the exercises and assignments.

Please complete the remaining Module 6 (Chapter II-5) activities in the order listed below. Hopefully, this will enable you to have the optimal learning experience.

Read Chapter II-5 – Skill Learning section. This discusses the above assessments, and provides the research and empirical evidence about power and influence.
Review Module 6 (Chapter II-5) DMS PowerPoint – “Gaining Power and Influence.”
Study the materials in the Course Material Resources Folder.
Watch the Video: “Power and Political Behavior.” (Note: The video can be found within MML under “Assignments > Do Homework” for Chapter 5)
Complete Assignment (A0601). Complete the five multiple-choice questions accompanying the “Power and Political Behavior” video. Transpose your answers onto the answer sheet template attached to A0601. Upload your completed answer sheet by 11:59, Sunday.
Complete Assignment (A0602) – “Dynica Software Solutions” case. Note: This case is within the Skill Analysis section under A Case Involving Power and Influence on page 253 in the text. This assignment contains three questions. Please follow the guidance and special instructions that are provided. Due: 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
Post Journal entries – Assignment (P0201). Continue to make entries in your journal regarding experiences, applications/results, lessons learned etc. in keeping with this earlier personal assignment.
Start your "You, Inc." Paper (A0802). Complete by the last day of class. See Appendix I in the syllabus for detailed instructions. Also, see the two-page guidance memo, "You, Inc. - Lesson Plan and Skills Template," attached as a separate resource in this module.
Review and apply the “You, Inc.” materials provided as a special “You, Inc.” resource in this module to help you with your paper.
